Bromination of Alkyl Benzene
The following button will take you through the Bromination of Alkyl Benzene Experiment. The first button takes you through the experiment. The second button will help you will determining the ratio of products using the NMR spectra. As seen in the experiment video, the reaction vessels were covered with aluminum foil. What role does this play in the experiment? I explained in detai this reaction in lecture. The only difference is alumina is acting as aluminium tribromide in the reaction. Although the video shows the bromination of toluene, the products for ethyl benzene, cumene and tert-butyl benzene were also isolated. You will need to analyze the data for the reaction with each of these four compounds. An IR spectra was taken of each and basically looks identical, so only the product with the toluene is in the IR link. The refractive index of each product were also taken and are as follows: product of toluene = 1.550, product of ethyl benzene = 1.546, product with cumene = 1.537, product with tert-butyl benzene = 1.533. NMRs for all the products were also taken. A complete mechanism for one of these products will need to be outlined in your lab report.
